Strange burning phenomenon of three flame retardant plastics: why is the flame retardant effect uneven?

Why are spline surfaces easier to burn?

Contrary to the above case. A customer said that the splines made of his flame-retardant ABS+decabromodiphenylethane are easier to burn on the surface, but the cross-section is more flame-retardant.

This is because, in the melt blending state of decabromodiphenylethane, ABS is molten, while decabromodiphenylethane is infusible and the viscosity is infinite. According to the principle of thin wrapping, decabromodiphenylethane is wrapped by ABS. In this way, the surface flame retardant of the part is less, and the core flame retardant is more. This leads to the phenomenon that the surface has poor flame retardancy and the core has good flame retardancy.

Why is the longitudinal flame retardant of flame retardant splines better than horizontal?

According to the normal UL94 vertical burning test, it is found that the burning time of the strip is short, but the strip is rotated 90°, and the test is carried out like a vertical combustion. The result is that the burning time of the strip is long.

I think this is mainly related to the orientation of the polymer resin. When the strip is burned in the vertical direction, the resin polymer shrinks upward to form a curled carbon layer, which plays a flame retardant role. When the spline is burned vertically in the transverse direction, the resin polymer shrinks and curls to the left and right sides after burning, and further exposes the new resin surface, so that the burning time is longer.

Interestingly, this seems to be instructive for the deployment of troops in the age of cold weapons. If you face the enemy's front and you take a column formation, when the enemy is charging, it can curl to the sides and back to form a thick barrier to hinder the enemy's impact. On the contrary, if your team's array is perpendicular to the enemy, under the impact of the enemy, it is easy to be invincible to both sides, shrinking and curling, leaving a gap, causing the entire team to be torn apart.
