Deceleration principle of twin-screw extruder granulator

by:TENGDA     2022-11-16

A typical reduction ratio for a twin screw extruder pelletizer should be between 10:1 and 20:1. Either gears or pulleys can be used for the first stage, but gears are preferred for the second stage and the screw is positioned at a large gear center. For some slow-running machines (such as twin-screw for UPVC), there may be three stages of deceleration, and the larger speed may be as low as 30rpm or less (ratio up to 60:1). On the other hand, some very long twin screws used for agitation can run at 600 rpm or faster, thus requiring a very low deceleration rate and more deep cooling.

In most extruders, the change in screw speed is achieved by adjusting the motor speed, and the drive motor usually turns at full speed around 1750 rpm, which is too fast for an extruder screw. If it were rotated at such a fast speed, too much frictional heat would be generated, and a uniform, well-stirred melt would not be produced because the residence time of the plastic was too short.
